Dimensions of 'Wishbone Chair'?
|Seat height||44 cm|
The price of a 'Wishbone Chair' depends on several factors, especially whether you buy it second-hand or the original from a furniture store. In a case of the latter, it can be a rather costly affair since the price is typically around 4-7.000 kr. (£460-800 / $600-1.000), depending on whether it is beech, ash or oak.
The price of a second-hand chair depends entirely on the individual offer, and you'll have to keep an eye on the different websites. On eBay, you can often find cheap, second-hand Wegner chairs. The price should obviously reflect the quality and the state of the chair, and remember to check each chair thoroughly before you make a possible purchase.
Wishbone Chair Durability
Wishbone chair is made of high-quality wood and special attention is paid to the production process and materials selection, to ensure the quality of the final product. During the manufacturing process, over 100 steps are carried out by hand by skilled craftspeople, in accordance with the original design by Hans Wegner and production plan by Carl Hansen. This thoughtful approach ensures the Y Chair’s durability and if you take good care of it, it can last for more than 50 years, even if you use it daily as a dining chair.
High-quality wood and masterful joinery in line with the original design make the wooden frame especially sturdy and it is often the woven paper cord seat that wears out after about 50 years when you have to replace it.
Strongly influenced by the design philosophy of Organic Functionality style - a modernist school that largely influenced mid-century Danish design, the Wishbone Chair aims to provide comfort and functionality, while also being stylish and aesthetically pleasing. Wegner’s masterful usage of joints, shapes and materials ensures good support for your back so Y Chair certainly isn’t the chair you can’t wait to get out of. On the contrary, you can easily relax in this unique dining chair and enjoy conversation with your family or guests for hours on end. Furthermore, if you wish to give your office a modern, minimalist, yet organic look in the Scandinavian style, Wishbone chair might be a perfect choice.
Manufacturing and Design Process
Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 the Y-Chair is the last and arguably the most distinct addition to a Wegner series inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in traditional Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs. Produced by Carl Hansen & Søn from 1950 the Wishbone chair went on to become Wegner’s most successful design and a jewel of his long and productive career. Hans Wegner’s work is often credited for changing the general public’s view of furniture in the 1950s and 1960s, while his focus on designing chairs earned him the title ‘The Master of the Chair’. The Y-Chair, with its distinct, yet lightweight design focused on functionality certainly exemplifies both Wegner’s ability to communicate his design philosophy to the general public and the reasons behind his unofficial title.
The Wishbone chair, catalogued as Ch 24 at Carl Hansen & Søn, is seen by many as a giant leap in furniture design, and a prime example of Hans Wegner’s masterful knowledge of joints, shapes and materials. The Y-Chair’s back legs are steam-bent into a curve that joins the circular top rail which is combined with arms into a single piece. The characteristic Y-shaped back, from which Wegner’s chair gets its name, provides comfortable support while giving stability to the top rail. Innovative usage of, at the time, rather complex joints provides the Wishbone chair with stability and robustness, without increasing its weight, while the choice of shapes and materials ensures that the Y-chair retains functionality and comfort as its characteristics while also keeping its distinct and modern look.
Colours and Texture
While the Wishbone Chair can fit into many different décor styles, it really shines in homes decorated in Scandinavian style. But, regardless of whether you want an addition to your Danish furniture collection or just a stylish dining chair to give your home that special something, you should be careful to choose the variant that suits your personal taste and the look of your room.
Different types of wood, in combination with different finishes strongly influence the texture and the visibility of the wood grain. If you’re looking for a more natural look, you might go with oak or ash, since the wooden texture will be visible through the paint. On the other hand, if you want to keep your room in purely black or white tones, you might choose painted beech which will minimize the visibility of the wood grain.
You should keep in mind that oak and ash are only available in black, so if you’re looking for Y Chair in different colours, you should go with beech.
Wishbone Chair in New Colours
Over the decades, the continuous production and unwavering demand for this classic of Danish furniture design lead to some slight changes in the design. The height has been increased by 2cm to accommodate the increasing average height and still retain its comfort, while more versions in new colours have been produced in recent years.
A few models have been produced in bright and vivid colours for those who wish to add some playful tones to the sometimes a bit monotonous look of the modern décor focused on white tones.
In 2010, the Y Chair celebrated its 60 years anniversary, and it was on this occasion that two new series were announced – Ocean Series with blue variants, and Citrus Series in lime green tones.
The Wishbone Chair on Sales?
Due to the chair’s iconic, timeless design and immense popularity, it is very rarely on sale. Danish furniture stores have little interest in lowering the price since the high demand ensures that all the chairs are sold rather quickly. So, if you’re looking for this Wegner’s classic at a lower price, you should probably consider other options, such as buying a copy or a second-hand model.
Second-Hand Wishbone Chair
The exceptional durability of the Y Chair makes it possible to find this classic of Danish design in second-hand furniture stores, or on websites like eBay or Gumtree. However, you should keep in mind that the condition of the chairs varies a great deal and buying second-hand can sometimes be a bit of a lottery. So, always be sure to carefully inspect the chairs to determine their condition and see if the previous owner took proper care of it. Pay special attention to the paper cord seat since it can become worn out way before the wooden frame shows any signs of age.
Cushions in Fabric or Leather
While the Y Chair is well-known for its comfort, you might want a softer seat, so a cushion is always an option. What’s more, cushions also have the practical advantage of protecting the woven paper seat so it can last a lot longer.
You can buy cushions in either fabric or leather according to your preference – and your budget. You can get the custom-made cushions at Danskmøbeldesign.dk (around 599kr. / £70 / $90 per cushion), while you easily can find them cheaper if they do not have to be custom made. Price also depends on whether you choose leather or fabric, as well as the type of leather. The so-called basic leather is the cheapest type, but the quality is not nearly as good as the more expensive types.
Hans J. Wegner's Most Popular Chair
Wishbone chair, also known as Y-Chair or Ch 24, famous for its unique design and iconic features is a prime example of ‘Danish Modern’ and also the most well-known Wegner’s design. While fulfilling the demands for comfort and stability, the Wishbone chair retains its distinct look which stems from the blending of minimalism and organic softness. With clearly visible inspiration and an original form, Hans Wegner’s Y-Chair learns from history but is an undeniably modern piece of designer furniture. With its distinct look and functionality, based on minimalist shapes and natural materials, the Wishbone chair truly is a crown of Wegner’s work, modern today, as it was in the 1950s when it was first produced.
The Wishbone Chair was also a great international success with over half a million models sold in the United States and the ever increasing demand in Japan.
